What is EM™?

EM™ is an abbreviation for “effective microorganisms”, a multi-culture of coexisting anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms identified and cultured by Dr. Teruo Higa. These consist of five families, ten genera, and more than eighty species of microorganisms which were named as a group, EM™.

How is EM™ used?

EM™ was first used in agricultural applications to reduce/eliminate the use of chemicals and fertilizers. EM™ is now being tested and used for solving environmental problems associated with water pollution, pollution from livestock, perishables, bioremediation and industrial wastes in sites around the world.

Dr. Higa, Ph.D., is a professor of horticulture at the College of Agriculture, University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan.

In the early stages of Dr. Higa’s scientific career he suffered from sickness and allergy caused by agricultural chemical as he worked as a farming instructor. He began to look for alternatives and eventually came upon microorganisms which had been used in food and alcohol distillation since the very early days of human history.

Currently Dr. Higa spends nearly half of his time successfully leading the efforts of utilizing EM technology in agriculture.
